Background of the Study
This study analyzes gender-based cyberbullying among youths in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area, Imo State. With the increasing integration of digital platforms in daily life, cyberbullying has emerged as a significant concern, particularly affecting young people (Smith, 2023). Gender-based harassment online not only perpetuates harmful stereotypes but also exacerbates mental health issues among targeted individuals (Johnson, 2024). Recent trends indicate that female youths often experience more severe forms of cyberbullying, while male youths are pressured to conform to aggressive online behaviors (Brown, 2025). The study investigates the nature and extent of cyberbullying incidents, exploring the socio-cultural factors that drive these behaviors. By combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews, the research seeks to understand the psychological and social ramifications of gender-based cyberbullying. It also evaluates existing digital safety measures and their effectiveness in protecting youths. The insights gained will contribute to the development of targeted interventions to mitigate online harassment and foster safer digital environments (Ade, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Cyberbullying in Owerri Municipal presents a critical challenge, with gender-based harassment affecting youths differently. Female youths often face targeted abuse that undermines their self-esteem, while male youths encounter pressures to engage in aggressive behaviors. These patterns contribute to a hostile digital environment and have adverse psychological effects. There is a pressing need to understand the underlying factors driving this behavior to develop effective preventive measures and support systems (Johnson, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of gender-based cyberbullying among youths.

  • To analyze the different forms of cyberbullying experienced by male and female youths.

  • To propose effective digital safety interventions.

Research Questions:

  • What is the prevalence of cyberbullying among youths in Owerri Municipal?

  • How does cyberbullying differ between genders?

  • What measures can mitigate gender-based cyberbullying?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Female youths experience higher rates of cyberbullying than male youths.

  • H₂: Gender norms influence the nature of cyberbullying behaviors online.

  • H₃: Strengthening digital safety measures reduces cyberbullying incidents.

Significance of the Study
The study is significant as it provides insight into gender-specific dynamics of cyberbullying among youths, informing policymakers and educators on effective strategies to combat online harassment. The findings will support the creation of safer digital spaces and improve mental health outcomes among affected youths (Brown, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The research is limited to examining gender-based cyberbullying among youths in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and the rapidly evolving nature of digital interactions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Cyberbullying: The use of digital platforms to harass or intimidate individuals.

  • Digital Safety: Measures and practices aimed at protecting users from online threats.

  • Gender-based Harassment: Targeted abusive behavior based on an individual’s gender.
